Accelerated Reader, AR for short, is a nationally acclaimed computerized reading program developed by Advantage Learning Systems. AR brings the wonderful world of children's and young adult literature together with technology to give reading a special appeal to today's children.
AR promotes reading comprehension among K through 12th grade students by developing thousands of reading practice quizzes on quality fiction and informative non-fiction books to accomodate a variety of reading interests. There are also easy-to-use report systems for teachers and parents to monitor their kids' progress.
We believe that reading is crucial to the development of various language and comprehension skills, as well as to the enrichment of the mind. In order to encourage our students to become more active and successful readers, our school has implemented the AR program. Through annual reading challenges and other incentives, the library aims to motivate and encourage students to grow as readers.
Readers can succeed in a variety of ways according to their personal goals and interests. In addition to the annual reading challenges, students can also enjoy spending their "fun-filled" AR points at the Library Store three times a year on prizes donated by the Gorman community and local businesses. We strive to improve the store and, with your involvement, ideas, and donations will make a difference you truly make a difference in our students' achievement.
To maintain our readers' interest in the program and to keep abreast of the newest reading trends, the library continually adds books with AR quizzes to the collection throughout the year. There are also designated subject quizzes available through AR (i.e., Spanish, Science, and Social Studies) which teachers may implement as required reading for a class or as enrichment. The Holy Family Library has full access to all quizzes created by the AR program.
