Internet Safety Recommendations

Monitoring online activities of children is an important responsibility for modern parents. Finding functional monitoring solutions and staying current with the latest social network trends can be challenging. To make it easier, the Bishop Gorman community has vetted the following monitoring solutions. These monitoring solutions can be used together or separately, but they have inherently different functions.

Social Media and Technology Presentations From March 22, 2017

Circle

  • $99 Hardware device to seemlessly monitor and restrict any home electronic device that accesses the Internet.
  • Categorize devices by user; each category can have different monitoring or filtering options or be disabled entirely.     
  • Set a bedtime; customize bedtimes by user.
  • Filter the Internet; customize filtering levels by user.
  • Requires iPhone or iPad to configure. Manage Circle from anywhere.

Circle Go

  • $10/Month service that extends control to a cellular data connection and other Internet networks when away from home.
  • Unlimited children and devices.

bark.us

  • $10/Month service that monitors for potential issues, such as cyberbullying, sexting, drug-related content, and signs of depression. An email and or text alert is sent if an issue is detected.
  • Social media accounts are entered into bark.us, advanced machine learning analyzes social media posts to recognize potenial problems.
  • Analyzes text, images and video. Parents only see content that is recogized as having a potential problem.
  • Unlimted children and devices.

Alternative Unvetted Monitoring Solutions

The solutions below enable more aggressive monitoring and tracking. They have not been vetted by the Bishop Gorman community, but they receive good online reviews.

  • Works with Android and iOS devices.
  • Must install app on all of the child's devices. 
  • Monitors many, but not all social media platforms. Provides detailed reports.
  • Monitor text messages, photos, video, facetime and browsing. Provides detailed reports.
  • Location tracking.

  • $14.95/Month service for unlimited kids.
  • Must install app on all of the child's devices. 
  • Works with Android and iOS devices.
  • Monitors many, but not all social media platforms. Provides detailed reports.
  • Monitor text messages, photos, video, facetime and browsing. Provides detailed reports.
  • Location tracking.

Safety Tips
 

  • Talk to kids about resposible Internet and social media use.

    • If possible, do not enter personal information such as phone numbers and addresses.
    • Take a moment to review privacy settings.
    • Do not meet with anyone from the Internet.
    • Be mindful that people on the Internet may be lying about their age and or gender.
    • Do not bully. Conversely, report bullying to an adult.
    • Do not share passwords, not even with best friends.
    • Do not post provocative pictures.
  • Implement Internet time limits.

    • Collect devices each night.
    • Use the Circle bedtime feature. (Only blocks the Internet, not games and other apps.)
    • Use the Circle time limits feature to allow Internet access for a set amount of time each day.
  • Implement Internet filtering.

    • Use the Circle filter. Set individual filter levels for each family member.
    • Use the Circle Go service to filter devices when away from home.
  • Monitor social media use.

    • Use the bark.us service to monitor for potential issues. This service is a compromise between parents and children, as parents do not see every post, only those that may be a sign of a serious problem. Alternatively, parents may opt for a more aggressive monitoring services such as uknowkids.com or teensafe.com.
