Cardinal Newman Society Renewal

Bishop Thomas K. Gorman Catholic School is very proud to announce that it has been renewed as a Cardinal Newman Society Recommended school. As one of the first schools to gain this recognition, we are proud to continue to provide families an exemplary Catholic education which encompasses the mind, body, and soul of every student.

This morning, Bishop Gorman faculty, staff, and students met for Morning Prayer followed by the exciting announcement.

Founded in 1993, the mission of The Cardinal Newman Society is to promote and defend faithful Catholic education. We serve the needs of Catholic families and educators by:

  • advocating and supporting fidelity to the teaching of the Catholic Church across all levels and methods of Catholic education;

  • identifying and promoting clear standards of Catholic identity and best practices in Catholic education; and

  • recognizing exemplary Catholic educators and institutions committed to truth and the integral formation of their students.

Cardinal Newman Society Recommended schools must prove that they meet each of the following standards:

Standard 1: Catholic Education is rooted in the Divine, Salvific mission of the Catholic Church

This means that the school is proud of its Catholic identity and leads with this commitment in its public presentation. It also means that the school is committed to evangelizing and to the salvation of its students.

Standard 2: Catholic Education models Christian Communion and Catholic Identity

This means that the school is faithful to all of the teachings of the Catholic Church, that it provides a loving, engaging, and compelling ecclesial experience to all members of the community, that it seeks to build a strong community, and that it partners with parents and recognizes them as the primary educators of their children.

Standard 3: Catholic Education teaches students to encounter Christ through prayer, Scripture, and Sacrament

This means that the school views the Eucharist as the Source and Summit of the Christian life, and that it lives liturgically, providing ample opportunities for prayer and participation in the Sacraments; most importantly, the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass, which is the most perfect form of prayer.

Standard 4: Catholic Education integrally forms students as physical, intellectual, and spiritual beings called to perfect humanity in the fullness of Christ.

This means that the school emphasizes, cultivates, and integrates faith and reason throughout the curriculum, and that it teaches love and mercy, respect for human dignity, the sanctity of human life from conception to natural death, and chastity according to one’s vocation.

Standard 5: Catholic education imparts a Christian vision of the world, of life, of culture and of history, ordering the whole of human culture to the news of salvation.

This means that the school presents all branches of knowledge as being connected, complementing each other, and ultimately connected to God, the source of them all and that it provides for the integral formation of the whole person—body, mind, and spirit—in light of his or her ultimate end and the good of society.
