Internships for Credit

The Internship for Credit program at Bishop Thomas K. Gorman Catholic School is an opportunity for Juniors and Seniors to earn academic credit for working in commerce in the Tyler area. Students receive entry-level training to perform the duties and responsibilities of a commensurate position. The work takes place during the school year and is part of the academic schedule for the student.

Benefits to Student

This program allows students to embrace our Catholic Integrated Liberal Arts Curriculum more fully by giving them both the opportunity and the freedom to put their knowledge to use in performing the tasks of a job. This gives them invaluable experience to explore possible career paths to which they may be called and gives them confidence in their ability to succeed.

Benefits to Employer

This is a tremendous outreach for employers, allowing them to give back to the community they serve. It also creates a pipeline of future employers and career paths for young people to pursue upon graduation. With the proper training, there is also a cost-savings involved in work output relative to the level of compensation.

Earning Academic Credit

This opportunity is categorized as an elective academic credit. Students are evaluated by their supervisor. They go through an informal evaluation every two weeks and a formal evaluation quarterly. All ratings are averaged at the end of the semester and a grade is assigned. All ratings are on a 5-point scale and will match the school grading:

  • Score of 5 between 90%-100% A

  • Score of 4 between 80%-90% B

  • Score of 3 between 70%-80% C

  • Score of 1 or 2 69% or under No credit

The following are the qualifications for Junior and Senior students to participate in the program:

  • Minimum GPA of 2.5

  • No more than five missing assignments for the academic year during which the student applies
